The HubSpot Claude integration can do incredible things. You ask Claude to check which contacts opened last week's email but didn't click, and two minutes later you have a clean list and a chart to go with it. The problem is, without documenting your prompt (and let’s face it, which marketers have the time to do that?), a clever one-off isn’t repeatable. Later down the line, when you or a colleague try to reproduce it, you’ll likely get a different result.

Enter HubSpot Claude skills.

With Claude skills, you can take a single action and turn it into an AI-powered marketing process that can be used again and again. With HubSpot and Claude skills combined, anyone in your team can run the same process, in the same way, every single time.

For marketing leaders, think of skills as a step closer to streamlining and scaling marketing operations. It’s a part of AI enablement we’re really excited about at MarCloud!

Whether you've already connected Claude to HubSpot or you're still considering the merits of integration, here's what you need to know.

HubSpot Claude skills: Quick summary

  • The HubSpot connector for Claude gives Claude secure, read-only access to your CRM data, so you can ask questions in plain language and get answers grounded in your own context.

  • A Claude skill is a reusable and customisable set of instructions that teaches Claude how to carry out a specific task the same way each time.

  • Put simply, the connector is the access and the skill is the method, and you need both to make a marketing process repeatable.

  • Good candidates for a skill are the repeatable, rule-based jobs that currently live in one person's head, such as list QA, lead scoring, and campaign reporting.

  • Some work should stay firmly with people, and knowing where to draw the line is important.

What are HubSpot Claude skills?

A HubSpot Claude skill is a reusable set of written instructions that teaches Claude how to carry out a specific marketing task the same way every time, using your live HubSpot data. The connector gives Claude access to your CRM, and the skill gives it a repeatable method to follow once it gets there.

When HubSpot and Anthropic launched the connector, the headline was access. You could suddenly ask Claude about your contacts, campaigns, and deals in plain English and get answers based on your real numbers rather than something generic.

That's useful for one-off questions, but access alone doesn't tell Claude how you like a job done, which is where skills come in. A skill contains the same steps you'd take, the context Claude needs to know, and what a good result looks like, so the output is consistent no matter who runs it.

HubSpot connector vs Claude skill: What is the difference?

Here’s how they compare:

HubSpot Connector for Claude Claude skill
What it is The live connection to your CRM A reusable set of instructions for a task
What it does Gives Claude access to your data Gives Claude a repeatable method
On its own Answers ad-hoc questions Has no data to work with
Together Turns a general assistant into a dependable one that runs your process the same way, every time

Why one-off AI prompts aren’t enough

Process debt holds a lot of teams back. By this, I mean the pile of knowledge that lives in people's heads, undocumented. You’ll notice it whenever someone is on leave or off sick, and a seemingly simple job can't happen.

Many businesses fix process debt by writing standard operating procedures. A good SOP describes a process, but it can't run one, and these often become out of date when a process changes. Generally speaking, SOP documents are filed and left for dust.

Then you have workflows in HubSpot. These can handle rule-based steps, and in some cases these are enough, although they are far more simplistic than AI, and workflows can’t make judgement calls, since they rigidly follow logic without context.

A Claude skill, on the other hand, both documents the process and carries it out.

How to use HubSpot Claude skills for repeatable processes

Each time you review the output and feed a correction back into a skill, the next run improves. Over time, the process becomes more reliable. Skills can also be joined together, with the output of one becoming the input to the next.

For example, you might have one skill that spots an anomaly in your campaign numbers, another that digs into the likely cause, and a third that writes it up in the format your leadership team will understand. Suddenly, Claude runs an end-to-end process.

Which marketing processes are worth turning into a skill?

The rule of thumb is to look for jobs that are repeated often, follow broadly the same steps each time, and currently depend on one person's judgement to get right. For instance:

  • Checking and segmenting a list before a send, so nothing goes out to the wrong people.

  • Qualifying and scoring leads when your CRM data is patchy or inconsistent.

  • Pulling together campaign attribution and performance reports, including which assets touched the deals that closed.

  • Reviewing lifecycle stage movement to see where contacts are stalling.

  • Building out an event or campaign, from the HubSpot campaign and lists through to the workflows and landing page.

  • Enforcing UTM tagging and naming conventions so your reporting stays clean.

As a starting point, these are common use cases for improving efficiency via Claude skills.

The process, in a nutshell

  1. Write down the process as it exists today in someone's head, including the questions they ask, the properties they check, and the best format for leadership.

  2. Capture all of that as a skill in Claude, along with the reference context it needs, such as your naming conventions and an example of a report you were happy with.

  3. Connect Claude to HubSpot through the connector so the skill runs against your live data.

  4. Run it, review the output against your standard, and feed back anything that was off so the next run improves.

  5. Hand it to the team, at which point anyone can produce the same result, i.e., a board-ready report, without the person who originally built it.

Building Claude skills is a fairly technical task, so you’ll want to bring in HubSpot specialists or in-house developers to support you.

What to automate and what to keep with people

As a Diamond HubSpot partner, we’ll be the first to say that not every process should become a Claude skill. Focus on repeatable, rule-based, higher-volume ones that are considered more like admin work. Keep things like strategy, creative judgement, calls on brand voice, and anything where being wrong is expensive and hard to spot after the fact, with your people.

Also, put a few sensible guardrails in place:

  • Review outputs before they go anywhere

  • Keep an owner accountable for each skill

  • Version your skills so you can see what changed and when

Claude can read and summarise your data but cannot delete anything.

Is the HubSpot connector for Claude secure?

The connector respects the user permissions already set in HubSpot, so a person only ever sees the data they're allowed to see. It can read, create, and update records, but it cannot delete anything. You can require Claude to ask for approval before it writes (set Write tools to "Needs Approval"), and every create or update is recorded in your HubSpot Audit Log against both the user and the connector.

Claude doesn't access custom Sensitive Data properties, including personal health information, and if Sensitive Data is switched on, it loses access to engagement data entirely. Anthropic doesn't use the data to train its models except where someone gives feedback or opts in.

On the commercial side, the connector itself is free and works across all HubSpot tiers. You do need a paid Claude plan, whether that's Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise, to use it.

How to get started with HubSpot Claude skills

Where you begin depends on where you already are.

If you have connected Claude to HubSpot, pick the single most painful repeatable process you own and turn that into your first skill. Starting where the process debt is worst should give you an immediate idea of the impact, which makes the case for doing more of it.

If you are still exploring, connect the native connector first and spend a couple of weeks simply asking questions of your data. This is probably enough to show you where the repeatable value sits, and once you can see it, you can start turning questions into skills.

What’s trickier than it looks is deciding which processes should be codified, which means building robust skills that hold up against messy data, and keeping the governance as you scale. This is the kind of thing our team does day-to-day as part of our AI enablement work.

Frequently asked questions

What are HubSpot Claude skills?

They are reusable sets of instructions that teach Claude how to carry out a specific marketing task the same way each time, using your live HubSpot data through the connector. The connector supplies the access, and the skill supplies the method, so a process becomes something the whole team can repeat rather than something one person does.

What is the difference between a Claude skill and the HubSpot connector?

The connector is the live link to your CRM that lets Claude read and edit your data, and the skill is the documented method that tells Claude how you want a job done. The connector answers one-off questions well, and adding a skill is what turns that access into a repeatable process.

Do I need to be technical to use HubSpot Claude skills?

Building robust skills does benefit from some experience, which is where a HubSpot partner helps, but running them doesn’t require you to be technical.

How do HubSpot Claude skills help prove marketing ROI?

They let you produce attribution and performance reporting the same way every month, which makes the numbers reaching the board consistent and easier to defend. When your reporting method is documented and repeatable, conversations with finance move on from how you got the figure to what you should do about it. They also ensure your marketing operations are streamlined and built to scale, for faster growth.

Is my HubSpot data safe with Claude?

Yes. The connector cannot delete anything, respects each user's existing HubSpot permissions, and does not expose sensitive property types. Anthropic does not train its models on the data shared through the connector, other than in specific cases such as opting in or giving feedback.

How much do HubSpot Claude skills cost?

The connector is free and available across all HubSpot tiers. You do need a paid Claude plan, such as Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise, to connect it. Skills themselves are simply instructions you create, so they carry no separate cost.
